JOURNEYMAN: A Peek Into The Past

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

Some great pieces of performance art like
Journeyman appear like a breath of fresh air sometimes and then halt abruptly. As a fan of this show, I always wondered why this great show was not ended in a proper way. But if there had been a genuinely strong and valid reason behind the cancellation of shows, then most of the current shows would not still be on air.

There have been plenty of shows which created an everlasting impact but were put off air. But the fans still cherish them whenever they get a chance to watch them. As the saying goes the older the wine the better it tastes.

Look at the wonderful and unique plot of Journeyman. The main focus of the story lies on a man named Dan, who is the main lead in the show and who unintentionally travels in time and changes the life of many people. His this ability is affecting his personal and professional life and what is more frustrating for him is the fact that he has no control over the jumps he makes into the past.

He also learns that he is not the only one who makes these trips back in time and that his ex-fiancée, Livia, as well as at least one other person has the same abilities. Wow, what an original masterpiece! We have had shows about superheroes and how they voluntarily use their powers to help people, but here is a man with a superpower, that he is totally unable to control. This is surely something quite different from the league.

How can anyone miss this show which presents the story of a superhero in an entirely different light? I hope all those who have missed it do visit this website and avail its great offers for downloading crystal clear videos of Journeyman with great sound quality as well. As a die-hard fan of this show, I found this website very helpful in reliving old memories of Journeyman.

When Journeyman actor Carrie Preston was hired for the cast of the HBO vampire series “True Blood,” she knew her role was to provide the comic relief. You can see what Preston did with the role of Arlene during the first season of “True Blood,” which came out on DVD Tuesday. (And when the second season of the show starts June 14 on cable channel.)

Pay particular attention to the first-season finale, where Preston’s role goes way beyond being a comic relief.

A huge chunk of the first season of “True Blood” - when it was not dealing with vampire lust, shape-shifting and bar fights - dealt with a murder mystery. It is Preston’s character who ends up being a key figure in that storyline, which resulted an uncharacteristic heavy emotional moment.

“It was a very emotional episode. But, it was really great to be given that task and responsibility. I was responsible for the gravitas of the situation,” Preston says during a telephone interview.

Filming for the second season of “True Blood” is three-quarters done. The Georgia native is working hard to find “the tragedy that comes in humor and the humor that is in tragedy.” She puts that kind of thought into a role, whether it is one line or 50.

Preston has played a wide range of parts. She’s made guest appearances on “Private Practice,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Wonderfalls” and “Arrested Development.”

One television role always generates interesting conversation. Preston appeared on an episode of the ABC mind-twisting “Lost” as the mother of series bad guy Benjamin Linus. The adult Linus is played by Michael Emerson, Preston’s husband. “It was my idea to play his mom,” Preston proudly says. “They wanted me to do a guest spot. I said to Michael, ‘Wouldn’t it make the fans go nuts if I were to play your mother.’ The next thing I know I am giving birth in the jungle.” She likes that her guest spot was someone connected so closely to her husband’s character. There’s not a lot of sharing of information about the two series in the couple’s home. Emerson doesn’t mind hearing spoilers about “True Blood.” But Preston refuses to hear even the smallest detail of what is happening on “Lost” because she’s too big a fan to have any moments ruined. This is a good acting time for the couple. Preston likes that she and her husband both have series on the air. She appeared in six potential series pilots before “True Blood.” Until “True Blood,” her work had such variety that she rarely got recognized, which used to bother her.

“Now I look at it as a blessing. I get to make these great transformations. Even when Michael came to the set of ‘True Blood,’ he couldn’t stop staring at me. This red-haired, buxom woman really is the furthest away from me as possible. I think Michael has a little crush on Arlene,” Preston says.

Despite the show dying an unnaturally early death (helped along by the WGA strike), we here at io9 still have a deep and abiding love for NBC’s Journeyman. Was it the San Francisco setting that made us love it so? Star Kevin McKidd’s mixture of dreamy eyes and jaw that could kill a man? The time-travel mechanics that updated Quantum Leap’s mission for a morally-conflicted 21st century? We may never know. But, thanks to an interview with show creator Kevin Falls, we do now know what would have happened had the show continued.

Aint It Cool interviewed Falls last December about the direction the show was going to take, post-WGA strike, but didn’t publish the piece for fear of spoiling any potential return for the series. Now that we all know that there isn’t going to be any more Journeyman in our future, they felt free to run the interview and reveal who was behind everything, and how Heroes ruined everything. Here’re some of the best bits:

Falls on who was behind Dan’s time traveling:

Let’s just say it was too specific and grand to be science or government… We would have led you to the water’s edge and let you figure it out.

On whether Dan’s time travels were for the greater good:

I think the end game was for the good. We wanted to explore some darker themes early on, but our ratings dictated otherwise. I wanted Dan to have to shepherd a hit man through his life to kill someone. It would really fuck Dan up, but there’d be a bigger reason for it. Sort of like life (not the TV show) we would have done it [late in the first season].

On Why Livia Faked Her Own Death:

We kept going ’round and ’round about that. We felt that Livia was keeping some secret from Dan that was huge and tragic.

On what was originally going to end the first season:

Well, it was going to be a plague, but then “Heroes” did that. When we were told “Heroes” was doing it, they suggested we change ours. No way we were going to win that one. We would have come up with something, but remember, I could read the tea leaves in mid-October. I decided then, let’s think in terms of 13 [episodes]… [In the never-shot final nine episodes of the season,] Katie and Dan were going to split up for a while. [Dan's brother] Jack and Dan were going to live together and then Dan and Katie would get back together. Livia was going to die in episode 20. Dan was going to save her in 21. And in 22, Dan would come back to his house in the present like he did in the pilot and someone else would be living there. Katie and Zack would be gone and this time Dan would have no idea how to get his family back.

Aint It Cool also includes a brand new interview with Falls at the end of the story, talking about his upcoming projects.

Life on Mars Like Journeyman?

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

August 5th, 2008 by Robert Seidman

Talk about comparisons you do not want to hear about your new show before it even airs! Maureen Ryan of the Chicago Tribune writes in her “The Watcher” column a piece titled:  The New Life on Mars - is this Journeyman, take 2?  Ouch!

Ms. Ryan is definitely not bullish on the US version of Life on Mars, writing:

“A fascinating, unique love triangle evolves between Sam’s ‘real’ in-the-moment friendship with Annie, his longing to get back to Maya and the fantasy of what could be,” the ABC release states.

I’ve already seen that show — it was called “Journeyman.”

I’d even started to like “Journeyman,” before it was yanked because too few viewers got on board with Kevin McKidd, who played a time-traveling reporter. “Mars” is also reminiscent of “Day Break,” another semi-serialized drama about a man traveling between different time periods.

Doesn’t ABC know that its main accomplishment with “Day Break” was to tick off fans who never got to see the show’s final episodes in a timely way after the Taye Diggs vehicle was canceled?

I’d even started to like Journeyman too, after it got over its stupid relationship nonsense and shed most of its viewers besides me, Bill and apparently Ms. Ryan.  Read the rest of her fairly scathing (loved it!) piece on the prospects for Life on Mars  via the Chicago Tribune site here.

I was a big Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine fan, so I hate that the prospects for Colm Meaney’s new show aren’t looking good before it even gets out of the gate.

Update: reader/commenter Holly notes that I don’t need to feel as bad because Colm Meaney has already been replaced and won’t be on the show.  Holly Notes that the entire cast from the pilot (which is being reshot) has been replaced other than Jason O’Mara.

[In yesterday's post, in the course of discussing the fate of shows on hiatus thanks to the ongoing writers' strike, I noted that only Journeyman was at risk for cancellation, thanks to disappointing ratings (and despite the fact that some of the blame for this falls on the unexpectedly weak performance of its lead-in, Heroes). NBC was particularly concerned that Journeyman consistently lost viewers not just from its lead-in but within its own hour. Nonetheless I thought the catastrophic impact of the strike on pilot season might resurrect this show for next year.

Sadly I must report that not only was I right about Journeyman being vulnerable, but that – so far from being saved by the strike – production for the show has been permanently shut down and Journeyman will not be back, this year or next.

I have it on excellent authority that shortly before Christmas the sets were taken down and destroyed, which effectively cancels the show for good as of Dec. 21. As my colleague Rachel Thomas already reported, NBC passed on its option for the “back nine” to complete the first season. Fans now targeting Fox, on whose lots Journeyman was being filmed, to pick up the show are unlikely to be successful: Fox is said to be uninterested.

How would the show have ended? We won’t know until everyone has been officially released from their contracts. But at least the show’s creators were able to wrap things up before the end: the last episodes, broadcast in December, brought the show full circle, with Dan witnessing the passing of the gift to himself (and learning he is the last of the travelers apart from Livia), Livia getting married, Jack becoming supportive, and Katie (while still unsettled) discovering some self-reliance.

Journeyman was one of the best and most interesting new shows of the season, and canceling a quality show knowing you’re going to have trouble filling slots in the fall is inexplicable. It even had cool opening credits, something you don’t get much these days. (Compare the graceful and atmospheric credits for Journeyman with, say, the profoundly stupid opening credits for Bionic Woman, which seem to involve Jaimie busting out of a shower stall.)

More importantly, the show avoided obsessing on the mechanism of the fantasy, or the random problems of Dan and Livia’s charges, and concentrated on how traveling disrupted and transformed the lives and personalities of Dan and everyone around him. This made for compelling stories about reasonably complex, interesting people you’d want to spend time with in real life. I like Chuck, for example, but I’d rather scrub my toilet than spend a night at a pub with any of its characters. Dan, Livia, Katie, Jack, and Hugh are people I’m going to miss. ABC is not officially confirming the news yet, but reliable sources tell me that Rome-ing Journeyman Kevin McKidd has just signed on the dotted line to join ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy for its upcoming season.

Playing a surgeon who arrives at Seattle Grace fresh from a tour of duty in Iraq, McKidd will first be (barely) glimpsed during the two-hour season premiere. McKidd’s character, by some accounts, ultimately will play doctor with Cristina, who has been nursing a broken heart and a seriously bruised ego ever since you-know-who didn’t stop talking skedaddled out of Seattle a season ago.

Word of McKidd’s possible casting first appeared at EW.com. – Matt Mitovich
